Civilization II for the mac uses a funny graphics system that uses a non-standard color palette in the PICT files it uses. Thus, if you try to edit the Units.pict and then save the file, when you try to use it it looks horrible. There are a couple of workarounds to this problem.
This seems to be the best solution. Here is a pristine copy of the Units.gif file. I suggest that you download it and edit it as you please in gif format (I have used graphic converter, you may use any other program), then save the file as a .gif file. Finally, convert it to a pict file. This works quite well. The problem occurs if you try to convert the file back to .gif after it's a .pict file. You'll end up with a screwed up file.
This is a more tricky solution. The Civ II PAL is an application that changes the color palette to a more standard one. This is useful if you want to do a minor change to the xxx.pict file. Here is the Read ME This supposedly works with any graphics program. I have found that it only seems to work well with something called Ansel (found in More For Your Games, Civ II section ). Please let me know if you find other programs that work with it or even better, a graphic program that does not mess up the color palette.
